Clueless (1995)

A classic film that eventually shaped 21st century movies such as Mean Girls. A cliché rom-com of a teenage girl attending high school in Beverly Hills. Following her journey through new/old friends, romantic interests, and growing up, Cher’s life is one big, unusual movie.

This film contains well-thought writing, however it’s not unique. If we consider 21st century teenage movies, this film would just fall into the mediocre category. The plot didn’t have any monumental element that occurs to make it different from all the other rom-coms. The storyline, for the most part, is mediocre and predictable.

Yet, the film still contained an element of exceptional comedy that captivated the hearts of many of viewers. Being as it helped led to the making of Mean Girls, Clueless creates amazing dialogue with a touch of comedy undertone every so often. The comedy, for me, is one of the few reasons I like this film.

With spunky characters and a Beverly Hills high school setting, this film does not portray an authentic realism. High school students do not smoke on school property and in clear sight of the teachers. The majority of students do not behave this ridiculous in class. This film’s whole setting at an unrealistic school environment really distracts the viewers’ from the main storyline.

However, this film is perfect for cliché and rom-com film lovers. The characters are interesting. The storyline is consistent. The jokes are exceptional. And the film leaves you with a warm-heart feeling in the end. But the film does not have any spectacular element to make it stand out. No big twist that no one expected occurred. Yet, I do believe this was how the director intended and, if so, he did it beautifully. It just wasn’t my cup of tea and I preferred Mean Girls better than this film because of Mean Girls memorable quotes.
